QuickStartTennis is a format supported by the tennis industry. It is a play format that can be incorporated into any existing program.Goals are to increase play among kids ages 10 & under by using graduated courts, racquets, balls and scoring. This is the tennis industry’s answer to the junior leagues of baseball and soccer! Learn while you play!

Adults—Tennis instructional programs are classified using the National Tennis Rating Program scale. These descriptions will help you choose the correct level.

1.0 Beginner: Player is just starting to play tennis.

1.5 Beginner: Has limited experience, still working on getting ball into play.

2.0 Beginner II: Needs on-court experience, has obvious stroke weaknesses, is familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles.

2.5 Advanced Beginner: Learning to judge where ball is going; court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of same ability.

3.0 Intermediate I: Is fairly consistent when hitting medium paced shots, but not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up, one-back.

3.5 Intermediate II: Has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. Exhibits more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles.

4.0 Advanced Intermediate: Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots plus ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally forces errors when serving. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. Teamwork in doubles is evident.

4.5 Advanced: Has begun to master the use of power and spins, is beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots, and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and places second serve. Tends to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play common in doubles.

5.0 Advanced Competition: Has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, overhead smashes, and has good depth and spin on most second serves.

5.5 District or Sectional Rankings: Player has developed power and/or consistency as a major weapon. Can vary strategies and styles of play in competitive situations and hits dependable shots in stress situations. 6.0, 7.0: Players do not need NTRP ratings. They have had national rankings or are competing at a world class level.

Juniors: Characteristics of playing levels

1.0 Beginner: Player is just starting to play.

1.5 Beginner: Slightly more advanced than 1.0. Needs to coordinate moving when hitting ball. Still concentrating on getting ball over net from stationary position.

2.0 Beginner II: Beginning to coordinate footwork when contacting ball but not consistent in hitting ball over net. Can serve, but double faults often. Understands scoring and positions for serving and receiving. Limited success with volley but knowledge of court positioning in both singles and doubles.

2.5 Advanced Beginner: Able to judge where ball is going. Can sustain slow paced rally of several shots with player of same ability using forehand and backhand sides and can volley with moderate success. Can keep score unassisted, call own lines, serve overhand from baseline & understands basic rules.

3.0 Advanced Beginner: Getting better at moving to ball and improving court coverage, can sustain a rally with consistency on slow to moderate paced shots. Serves with fair consistency with few double faults. On groundstrokes, needs to improve control of height, depth, direction and speed. Attempts to move opponent from side to side.

3.5 Intermediate: Can sustain a rally and is beginning to develop directional control and depth of groundstrokes. Starting to recognize opportunities to attack short balls by coming to net. Is developing more spin and power on serve and seldom double faults. Is becoming more aggressive and applying basic strategy in singles and using teamwork in doubles.

4.0 Intermediate: Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on higher paced shots and has good court coverage. Has added variety in shot selection by using lobs, overheads, volleys and approach shots with some success. Is developing a game plan, is serving with consistency and is forcing some errors with power and/or spin. Demonstrates good teamwork.

4.5 Advanced Intermediate: Has a very dependable game and executes most shots on higher paced shots. Court coverage and footwork are sound & has begun to master the use of power and spins. Can vary depth of shots and game plan according to opponent. First serve may produce some winners and second serves are hit with good spin and placement. Can be aggressive in singles and doubles and covers weaknesses well. Is developing an offensive weapon.

5.0 Advanced Competition: Has good shot anticipation and often has outstanding shot or weapon around which a game may be structured. Can regularly hit winners or force errors on short balls and is capable of all shots. First serve is an offensive weapon and often allows rushing the net after the first or second serve. Volleys and overhead smashes are typically winning shots. Is matchwise and uses shots that have a high percentage of success in singles and doubles.
